For many couples, a K1 visa–aka the fiancé visa–represents hope, excitement, and the chance to start a life together in the United States. This is also an overwhelming time because you are planning an international move and a wedding, but you do not know anything about US immigration law and the timing of the process is slow and uncertain. Unlike the fast-paced drama on reality TV, this process takes patience, careful preparation, and teamwork to move forward successfully. The team at Cambridge Immigration Law will help you through all steps of this important process.
What the K1 Visa Process Involves
The first step of your K-1 visa process is to ensure that the US citizen and the noncitizen are eligible to be granted the K-1 visa. The team here at Cambridge Immigration Law will work with you to ensure you only start this process if you are eligible.
Your next step is to submit the I-129F, or Petition for Alien Fiancé(e). The U.S. citizen submits this to show that the relationship is genuine and intended for marriage. Our team will work with you to create an amazing compilation of documents that show that your relationship is real and that you intend to get married within 90 days of the noncitizen’s entry to the US.
Once the I-129F is approved, the noncitizen will be interviewed at the embassy to obtain a K-1 visa in the passport. Again, our team will work with you to prepare excellent evidence of the veracity of your relationship and your intention to marry.
Once the K-1 visa is approved and pasted into your passport, the noncitizen fiancé can enter the United States. The couple must marry within ninety days of entry. Our team will work with you to prepare the next step: the green card or adjustment of status application.
Once the noncitizen obtains the green card they have permission to remain in the US, work in the US, and leave and re-enter the US.
The K-1 process is challenging. It involves multiple steps: petition, visa approval, marriage, and adjustment of status, and it requires a couple to plan a wedding without knowing exactly when the visa will be approved. Also, the K-1 visa can be frustrating for the noncitizen when they enter and have to apply for a green card upon entry. This means that the noncitizen cannot immediately work upon entering the country.
The Reality Behind Shows Like 90 Day Fiancé
Television often highlights the drama because it creates entertainment. A show like 90 Day Fiancé brings heightened reactions, editing choices, and scenes designed to capture attention. Couples on these shows follow the same immigration rules as everyone else, but their experience is filtered through production. Viewers see arguments, surprises, and last-minute twists because that is part of the format.
Real life is usually very different. Most couples move through the K1 process with far less chaos, especially when they work with Cambridge Immigration Law. They gather documents, communicate regularly, and make thoughtful decisions about marriage and relocation. While timelines can feel stressful, it rarely involves the dramatic ups and downs portrayed on TV.
